We’ve all had that feeling. On a dark night in the middle of lockdown, when rain is pelting at the windows. We would much rather just grab a blanket, switch on Netflix and snuggle down in the warmth than do a workout. Although exercising seems much less appealing during a pandemic, it doesn’t mean it’s not necessary. In fact, it may be even more essential as we need to strengthen our bodies to protect ourselves from the virus.

In this article we’ve compiled a list of tips to help keep you motivated to stay active, even on the dreariest of lockdown days.
Exercise when it’s light
In a Scottish evening the majority of us are left in complete darkness, making us instantly associate it with nighttime and sleeping. Try to schedule your workout in the daylight hours as you will feel much more energised.
Warm your workout clothes
Simply getting out of your cosy pyjamas can seem rather grim. Solve this problem by timing your radiators to go on an hour before you get up and leave your clothes on them. This will not only heat the clothes up, making them more appealing to change into, but will heat the temperature of your room which will make the act of getting up also seem rather more attractive.
Reward each minute
For each minute of exercise, reward yourself by doing something you love. For instance, if you did half an hour of exercise, watch half an hour of your favourite TV programme afterwards. This is a great motivational tool, allowing you to get an immediate reward for your hard work, whilst also letting you snuggle down without feeling guilty.
Make use of home equipment
You don’t need fancy equipment to keep fit. Whilst gyms may not be accessible during the pandemic, there are lots of ways to stay healthy. A YouTube yoga tutorial, a hike in your local area or even a freshwater swim, if you can brave it. Make exercising an adventure rather than a chore.
Layer up
From leg warmers to thermals, wear layers that are easy to exercise. Moreover, if you like your exercise clothes, you’re more likely to wear them so use them as a motivational treat.
As you can see there are many ways to keep on top of your health during lockdown. From clothing to heating, it is all about putting in place different strategies to cope with your environment.
