Whilst 2021 may be another year off-campus, that doesn’t mean we can’t use 2021 as
a year to work on developing our CV’s. From building a fantastic portfolio to working
through extra-curricular courses, we have compiled a list of activities that will make you stand out to employers.

Work on your portfolio
There are many ways to develop a unique portfolio. Whether interested in photography, writing or filming, the list of opportunities is endless. Even if it’s an element that’s not part of your course, showing skills of creativity and innovation will be very appealing to employers. Wix has some very good portfolio templates that will help inspire you, whilst every RGU student has free access to the whole of the Adobe Creative Suite.
Employability Hub Events
From learning how to be LinkedIn savvy to becoming a winner in interview techniques, the RGU Employability Hub has some really valuable resources which every student should take a look at. Offering zoom calls from industry speakers, you can learn first-hand from people who actually work in the profession that you want to work in.
LinkedIn Learning
There are many LinkedIn courses that you should be able to access for free. Choose ones that will both interest you and look good to future employers. For some of your modules, your lecturers may even recommend specific LinkedIn learning courses that are particularly
valuable for your coursework, which you can then add to your CV once completed. Also, with LinkedIn courses, the great benefit is that it can be put directly onto your LinkedIn profile.
Volunteer with RGU:Union
From sports clubs to media groups to societies, RGU:Union is a buzz of activity. As the groups are all made up of volunteers, there are lots of opportunities to get involved. Through the RGU:Union website you will find out about the different organisations and you can then go look on the individual social media accounts to see if there’s any roles available. Additionally, if there is an area you’re passionate about and you want to set up a networking group or a society, you can email the union to see how to go about doing this.
Overall, there are many virtual ways to develop your CV and help you stand out from the
competition. Although we are at home, we still need to find ways to become the perfect candidates for our dream jobs.
